The Leishmania parasite transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Phlebotumus, is causing leishmaniasis or leishmaniasis, a serious disease that causes severe skin ulcers or inflammation in vital organs that affects dogs, rodents and humans.
Canine leishmaniasis usual symptoms such as hair loss around the eyes, ears, nose, skin wounds in areas prone to rubbing, flaking, lameness or joint swelling, fever, pale mucous membranes, loss of weight and appetite. The effects caused by skin lesions such as ulcers are caused by cutaneous form of the disease. However, the visceral form, even more serious, affecting vital organs such as the liver, spleen, or kidney, reaching cause kidney or liver failure, jeopardizing the life of the animal.

Most infections occur in the summer months and in winter the mosquito larval remains. Countries at risk of infection are mainly in Latin America and the Mediterranean region (Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, etc..)
Once acquired, the disease is incurable, treatments are aimed at controlling or preventing symptoms. Definitely the best option is prevention. However, there is no vaccine on the market against leishmaniasis. Among the recommendations are the use of nets in a risk area, avoid routes with dogs at dawn and dusk in the months of greatest risk, and the use of commercial products that repel mosquitoes.
